The Nelaga Territories

The dream lives on...
ImageGarpy the MagiGARP Says: - - - September 4, 2010

Garpity garp garp. Garpy is pretty sure those clouds changed their cycle times somewhat. Garpy misses long sunsets.

Behold! The long-awaited Nelagan Navy has revealed their Nelagan Naval Guide to the Untrained, and it is chuck-filled with ship classifications, naval ranks, battlegroup summaries, naval culture, and more. All shall know of our nation's naval might! Garpy's only complaint is that their mascot is one of those "Sea Dragon" things... as if such a beast could withstand a MagiGARP's deadly Splash attack!

Outside the Territories, Nelaga's first bid for Amity Island failed to be accepted by Shireroth ... er... Eastern Benacia ... well... that red country to the north, prompting a fairly big fiasco in which Nelaga said some unflattering things about... those guys... and then they came here to complain and defend themselves, which turned into a big clustergarp that eventually degenerated into a group therapy session.

A new discussion topic was started to try to create a new treaty by consensus of both nations, and almost unanimously everyone agrees on exactly what was in the first treaty that was rejected. Garpy has to ask what the point of all the hostility and rejection regarding the first treaty was all about! And hey, why is it the Mango-Eagle Treaty Discussion, anyway? Since when did the eagle become our national symbol! Garpy is the one doing all the work up here!

On another nearby island, Istvanistan's government finally collapsed, and a coalition between Nelaga, Gralus, and Babkha are negotiating a joint claim of the territory to serve our mutual interests. But increasing indigenous activity, possibly coupled with official Stormark support, may make this a sticky situation. But not to worry; the Nelagan Navy is already pulling their weight and has dispatched forces to secure our claim. Garpy swims beside them! To war, my fishy comrades! Hey, can I get a little spiked hat here or something?

In other news, Gravball fever (whatever THAT is!) is sweeping the nation, ducks are sneaky mallards and are the main course at Duckfeast in Maraguo, let's all give Jacobus's wife a helping hand, and you're running out of time to claim a bonus for filling our your merit calculations for August!

"Jasonia Palace once the most powerful city on Micras. Surveying an empire from a mountain in the clouds, it was an invincible fortress and a symbol of power known across the world. It fell into ruins in time, like everything in Jasonia, now mere echoes of the past. But we have traveled far in our journey, all of us, and find ourselves standing atop of ancient Mount Urojea once more. We are not here to just rebuild the past, but to create something new; stronger, more powerful, more lasting, without ever losing focus of where we came from. With this shovel, we all take the first step at keeping that dream alive. My friends, the restoration of the mountaintop official begins now, as does the construction of our new capital city - Nelagsara!"

And President Harvey scooped the dirt with the shovel dramatically, and there were many pictures taken, and several short interviews. It would make a good Skyline story the next day.

Hours later, he made his way back to the base camp of Sai'Pôr, still little more than a research camp even after all this time, though currently busting at the seams trying to accommodate all the media and minor officials that had turned up for the groundbreaking. Areuhat met him at his hotel, barely more than a converted barracks.

"Well well well," she said, looking him over. "After your famous breakdown during your first Presidential term and total silence during the first part of this one - still have no idea how you got re-elected by the way - here you are cleaned up and holding press events."

"You know it was last time," Harvey said, a bit defensive. "Saving the world and stuff got in the way of doing politics. It's a busy job, being part of a new Control of Destiny team. And since you're here, and I know how you hate the press, I suppose you've got some news for me that can't wait?"

"Don't flatter yourself," Areuhat said, laughing. "I actually came for the event. Well, for the real groundbreaking anyway. Here to see the death of a monument."

Harvey said, "Oh, I made sure it wouldn't all be totally lost. We've collected a lot of parts of the palace to make a pretty impressive museum. They have what they believe are the original metal front doors to the gate, if you believe it, fully restored and everything!"

"I mean about the Palace itself though. It's a shame. Nothing will be left in a few days."

"Why Areuhat. Sediment, from you? Surely you aren't getting emotional in your middle age," Harvey said playfully, poking at several of his companions pet peeves simultaneously - nostalgia and getting old.

She flushed momentary before letting her typical look of annoyance cover her feelings again. "Certainly not! I'm merely worried about anything that may still be within the ruins of the old Palace."

"Yeah. Yeah...," Harvey said, musing. "I had hoped to find some big secret there myself. But we've been down into basements and sub-basements and sub-sub-basements, and probably a few more subs, and found nothing really. Just old, broken stuff."

"Have you heard that there are reports of tourists and other ruffians breaking through the construction site and entering the ruins?"

Harvey shrugged, "Yeah? Well, not much we can do about it now. They've got two days before the heavy equipment makes its way up the mountain. We'll sound an all-clear before we begin, even do a little poking in the ruins to make sure nobody is down there, but if they're too deep and won't come out, well, not much we can do about it."

"Not like you, to be so dismissive of peoples' saftey," Aruehat said.

"But very like me to not be sympathetic to adventurers too stupid to know when to get out.," Harvey fired back. "Anyway, it's been a long day, and it's gunna get real noisy here after tomorrow. I need some solid sleep before the equipment starts making a racket."

(this can be considered sort of an open-ended RP. There isn't much left to the main story but if anyone wants to go on one last expedition into the ruins of Jasonia Palace before they get leveled with a sonic bulldozer or something, this may be a good time)

Vur'Alm, as Speaker, had of course been present at the press conference. There weren't many active members of the government left - something both Vur'Alm and the President intended to fix soon enough; but that had made it necessary that the Speaker, who technically should not be involved in the business of the executive, was there to smile for the cameras and shake hands and the like.

Earlier in the day, President Harvey had done him the honour of showing him the plans for the new palace, and brief reports on their work in excavating the old ruins. They had gone over it visually, archaeologically and (with the help of resident Gralan Fides) magically, and nothing had shown up of interest, in any of the basements, subbasements or subsubbasements. The Blackbirds and Epochs which had once been housed in the palace had gone years ago - a few to the Golden Eagle society; most probably met their demise at Shirithian hands millennia before. There had been hopes of lost artefacts, tech schematics - something of value - but no. Either it had been taken by the Jasonians when they fled; or it had been looted in the millennia past.

So Vur'Alm was most surprised, when the conference was over, to hear a noise from within the palace ruins. He had opted for some fresh air and taken a walk around the outside of the ruins - one of the privileges of office: no area was restricted - and it was about a third of the way around that he heard it.

Tick .... Tock .... Tick

It sounded like a grandfather clock, slowly ticking in the silence. The ticks were very slow indeed - more than a second apart - but the most curious thing was that they appeared to be originating from within the palace ruins. Vur'Alm walked closer.

Tick .... Tock ....

He could still hear it, as if it were right near him, but he could see nothing around. He cast a furtive glance, and then poked his head under the line of police tape marked "Caution - No Entry" and walked a few metres down one of the revealed stairways and into the ruin of the Palace. The sound was no louder, but he could tell that it was deeper within the palace. Hmm, could it be ...? In true scientific mindset, he pulled out his mobile phone, and pressed the record button. He waited for three full Ticks, and then stopped, and played it back. He could still hear the ticking around him; but from the mobile recording - nothing.

Vur'Alm smiled. His guess had been correct. There was something of value down there; but it wasn't what they had been expecting. No wonder Fides hadn't located any magical signatures down there - this was far beyond Gralan magic. What Vur'Alm could hear down there was a Chrono Artefact of the Microns; and why he could hear it was because he could sense the Chrono energy given off by it. If it had been missed by checks, it was either hidden, or small, or both. Most likely a one man temporal transporter - simple enough, by the standards of the early microns, but the technology had long since been lost to all but the Time Distortionists; and they guarded the secret fiercely. If it was what he expected, then this could really help extend Project Ptia.

It was two days before the heavy equipment made it up the mountain. He should be able to sense the Chrono Artefact's location as he got closer. He should be in and out before nightfall. What could go wrong? The palace ruins had been carefully investigated already. There was nothing left down there ... apart from the apparently worthless looking artefact he was seeking. Without a second thought, pulled out a torch from his pocket, and strode off deeper into the palace.

He was halfway down a third flight of stair when he heard a noise behind him. Vur'alm spun around, torch raised as something other sped past him. He watched in surprise as Amor materialised in front of him.
"Er... Ouch?"
"Nice try, Amor, but I did hear or see you 'accidentally' fall down here, nor is there a hole in the roof for that matter."
Amor glanced up, then back down with a sheepish grin and stumbled to her feet.
"Can't blame a gal for trying. So what's going on?"
"I don't think we've every been introduced? Would you reveal information to someone you didn't know who had stalked you into unsafe ruins?"
"But you know you can trust me, I just like Fides!"
There was an awkward silence.
"Okay," she sighed, "point taken. I am a very powerful, very bored mage and you are very alone in very old, very unsafe ruins. You are also very cute and I'd had for something to happen to you."
"Flattery, Amor?"
"Again, can't blame a gal for trying. So, can I come?"

Vur'Alm rolled his eyes, and Amor flickered her eyelashes back. "Alright," he said, "I could probably use your help if we get into trouble. But what we're looking for ... what I'm looking for ... is for JASO and one of their highly classified projects. It's not something you can just take off me and run back to Gralus with."
"Vur! I can call you Vur, right? Vur, what do you take me for, a common demon? I would never dream of robbing the people of Nelaga. The only thing I ever take off anybody is perhaps stealing your heart away, and even then, only for special people." Amor smiled winningly.
Vur'Alm was not in a mood to be charmed, however. His attention had already been stolen by what might be down there. "Ok," he said. "What I am about to tell you is Diamond III classification, and not to be spoken of again to anyone outside."
"Of course, Vur darling," Amor replied.
"I believe there is a Chrono Artefact of the early microns down here. I can sense something giving off Chrono energy, certainly. And I want to get it out before the heavy machinery gets here and builds over the palace ruins," Vur explained.
"And this artefact is valuable?" Amor asked.
"No idea," Vur replied. "But I'm hoping it's invaluable to JASO research."
Amor nodded, and then, to her surprise, Vur offered his arm. "Well, shall we?"

They progressed further down into the earth, past the fallen ruins of an old nation, past the relics of a forgotten age. Amor had gotten bored and was making light dance around Vur's head.
"I don't know why we can't just teleport to it!"
"One, I can't sense it when teleporting. Two you have no idea what Chrono Energy at close proximity will do to a teleport and three, with all the fallen walls around here a misplaced teleport could send the whole place crashing down."
"Huh- Fine..."
Vur jerked suddenly. Before Amor could stop him he rushed through a side door and then skidded to a stop. Amor walked quickly after him, careful to to disturb anything.
"Vur, what is it?"
She reached his side and looked at him, then down.
"Something was pulling me here..." muttered Vur'alm, he too looked at the great crevasse so cunningly hidden in the floor.
"I could jump that magically."
"I wouldn't, what if something nulled you from below?"
"Well, what do we do, then?
