The Nelaga Territories

The dream lives on...
ImageGarpy the MagiGARP Says: - - - September 4, 2010

Garpity garp garp. Garpy is pretty sure those clouds changed their cycle times somewhat. Garpy misses long sunsets.

Behold! The long-awaited Nelagan Navy has revealed their Nelagan Naval Guide to the Untrained, and it is chuck-filled with ship classifications, naval ranks, battlegroup summaries, naval culture, and more. All shall know of our nation's naval might! Garpy's only complaint is that their mascot is one of those "Sea Dragon" things... as if such a beast could withstand a MagiGARP's deadly Splash attack!

Outside the Territories, Nelaga's first bid for Amity Island failed to be accepted by Shireroth ... er... Eastern Benacia ... well... that red country to the north, prompting a fairly big fiasco in which Nelaga said some unflattering things about... those guys... and then they came here to complain and defend themselves, which turned into a big clustergarp that eventually degenerated into a group therapy session.

A new discussion topic was started to try to create a new treaty by consensus of both nations, and almost unanimously everyone agrees on exactly what was in the first treaty that was rejected. Garpy has to ask what the point of all the hostility and rejection regarding the first treaty was all about! And hey, why is it the Mango-Eagle Treaty Discussion, anyway? Since when did the eagle become our national symbol! Garpy is the one doing all the work up here!

On another nearby island, Istvanistan's government finally collapsed, and a coalition between Nelaga, Gralus, and Babkha are negotiating a joint claim of the territory to serve our mutual interests. But increasing indigenous activity, possibly coupled with official Stormark support, may make this a sticky situation. But not to worry; the Nelagan Navy is already pulling their weight and has dispatched forces to secure our claim. Garpy swims beside them! To war, my fishy comrades! Hey, can I get a little spiked hat here or something?

In other news, Gravball fever (whatever THAT is!) is sweeping the nation, ducks are sneaky mallards and are the main course at Duckfeast in Maraguo, let's all give Jacobus's wife a helping hand, and you're running out of time to claim a bonus for filling our your merit calculations for August!

(Let's get an RPG started. Who's in?)

ic: backstory:
Cerune was sitting at her desk, in her office, in the newly built headquarters of the Nelagan Marine Corps. It was a multi-story beast of a building that resembled the giant castles of old. "The Castle" as it was nicknamed had three ways in and out by ground level, and was protected by steel and concrete reinforced walls and even a moat (some question the effectiveness of a moat in modern society, but eh...). Construction was only about half way done on the rest of the base, but the "Castle" had been completed first, and all that remained was to dig the underground portions.

The blueprints called for an extensive underground network of bunkers and tunnels. Cerune and her generals remembered the harsh lessons they had learned on Amity and Mirioth in regards to being bombed, and swore that such a fate would not befall Aquata. She was finishing up some paperwork when she heard the ring of her phone. "Commandant Russell" she said. "We have a problem, Cerune." the other voice replied. Cerune's eyebrows furrowed. "John? What's wrong?" John, the assistant Commandant sighed and spoke. "Not over the phone. I've arranged an emergency meeting in the High Command Meeting Room in ten minutes. We have big problems." cerune nodded as a reflex, even though no one would see it. "I'll be there."

The High command meeting room, or HICOMMER for short, was where all the important meetings were held. It was on the first level of the Commandant's area of the "Castle", and commanded an impressive view of Camp Aquata. Seated on the far side was Special Operations Command Major General Natasha Rose. To her left was Colonel Noel Mason, the commanding officer for Task Force Serenity. To his left was Lt. General Gamemalvin Usa, the CO for the Marine Expeditionary Force. On the near side was Assistant Commandant John Murray, and next to him was an empty seat obviously meant for Cerune. As she entered the room, the guard who opened the door saluted her. She saluted back and the officers in the room stood and saluted her in turn as well. After a return salute to them, she spoke. "I don't know if I should be thanking you all yet, but you DID get me out of a few hours of nasty paperwork, so thanks for that at least." Cerune smiled foolishly and sat down next to John. Everyone seated at the table laughed lighty, save for Natasha, who never laughed unless someone was hurting or dead.

John nodded and his smile faded. "Let's get down to buisness. While digging the pit that will eventually become our lift system for the under-hanger (the hanger that would hang below the island down at the very bottom), our engineers ran into a... problem." Natasha scoffed and Noel grimaced. John continued. "There's something... down there." cerune's eyebrows furrowed again. "What do you mean, 'something's down there?' " Noel shook his head and spoke up this time. "We don't know for sure, but something had been imprisoned down there. We found evidence of broken chains and an entire cavern system completely cut off from the surface." Natasha cut off Noel and continued. "We started finding the bodies soon after."

Cerune shook her head. "Damn." She thoughtfully stroked her chin, and spoke up again after a few seconds of silence. "I assume you sent a team down there?" Gamemalvin spoke up this time. "Several. At first we sent in some Task Force Serenity teams, but they're all MIA now- presumed KIA. So we sent down a full company from the 1st regiment. Three made it back alive." Cerune perked up alittle at the thought of some potential intelligence. "And?" Gamme shook his head. "They've all been sent to the bughouse." Cerune let out a frustrated sigh and looked upward. "Tell me we got SOMETHING?" Natasha shook her head. "Nothing of use. They're all stark-raving mad. One claims to have seen actuall honest-to-gods demons down there. Another swears his own shadow got up and stabbed him. The third guy says he saw cthulhu." Cerune shook her head and Natasha spoke up again. "The ONLY credible thing we can take away from their ravings is that the second soldier really doesn't have a shadow anymore." Cerune's eyes widened. "Seriously?" Noel nodded. "Yeah, no shadow. It's the weirdest thing- defies all known science."

Cerune shook her head. "This is above our experience. We need some outside help. Some people with experience in old Jasonian lore and/or the supernatural in general." Natasha nodded her head. "I think I have some people in mind..."

(If your interested in this, post something below and i'll send out some soldiers to get you here. :))

Andreas had been looking through some tunnels on Nang. Despite having got all the anti-grav motors functioning, there was still much under there they didn't understand, and when he had a chance, he had a look down to see if he could find more. Today, there was no luck. He made his way to the surface and was going to return home when he sensed something ... odd ... underground. Very odd. He hurriedly made his way towards where he felt the disturbance, hovering slightly above the surface and zooming along it. He was paying more attention to the Astral Plane than the Material when he heard a shout and was stopped by several guards. He had accidentally walked into the Aquata Military base. This could be awkward ....

OOC: I'm so in, just not thinking very creatively this morning.

"Wassup?" Said Nick to Kathbhadh as he knocked on the Techies door.
"My narrative sense is tingling... there could be some sort of adventure to go on, want to ask?"
"Sure, why not (OOC: Feel free to opt out later)."

Fides rang Nick.

The conference room was still looking at Andreas when Nicks cell phone went off.
"I thought we couldn't get reception down here! This place is supposed to be lead lined!"
"Well... It's from Fides, so he probably stole my phone and put a booster in it. I'll just tell him not to call for the next few hours..."
Nicholas answered the phone.
"Hey Fides,"
"Hi Nick, any secret meetings going on?"
"What, how did you know I was in a meeting?"
"I have my ways..."
Kathbhadh stole the mobile and said; "We asked your secretary..."
"Oh..."
"Yeah..."
"Right!" said Fides wrestling the phone back from Kathbhadh, "Do you want us to come down?"
Nick looked at the assembled group.
"Well... If you really think you can help..."

OOC:i'm in, Kathy is LOA but still in unless he says otherwise (i.e. we ask his brother on Gralus)

OOC: Also not feeling particularly creative, but I'm in. Gman, I've left it open for you to take some marines if you want to develop their characters.

Allright kiddies, I think that's all ashore that's going ashore...

Andreas:

ooc: That's ok, as long as your having fun hm?

ic: The guards shouted to the hovering man to stop, JARs aimed and fierce looks cast, slightly amazed that the man was hovering, and furthermore, so out of it he got up and over a 6 foot barbed-wire fence. "You are in a restricted military base! Hands in the air and no sudden moves, or we will open fire!"

"Gentlemen, stand down. He is expected." A random Lieutenant yelled as he ran up to the unfolding situation. "The Major General is expecting him." The guards lowered their weapons and began to walk away, leaving Andreas in the hands of the lieutenant.

"Welcome to Camp Aquata, Minister Andreas. Please, come this way..."

Demon: Good to have you. I'll have everyone assemble in the HICOMMER so we can brief. Thanks for the link it's helpfull.

...and you watch too much Doctor Who. :P

Nick:

ooc: Thanks, chief.

ic: The room stood at attention and saluted the Commander-in-chief as he entered the room.

Quote:

This seems like the kind of job we need our best people on. Or at least the ones with the most interesting skills. I'd like Cerune, Andreas, myself, Fides and Kathbad to come, as well as whosoever Cerune chooses from the elite of the marines."

Cerune nodded. "I don't think any of my marines are capable of dealing with whatever is down there anyway, honestly. Their a fine combat force in regards to conventional warfare, but not when we're dealing with the supernatural." She turned her head back to the others in the room. "I don't want the entire senior command staff going down, just in case this turns deadly. We need to keep the chain-of-command intact." There was a general agreement, but Gammemalvin spoke up. "I'm going with you. I made your brother a promise when I left MASS to keep you safe. Where you walk, I walk. Ok?" Cerune opend her mouth to speak, but closed it and simply nodded. "Ok, Gamme... thanks." Assistant Commandant Murray spoke up. "Are we sure harvey or Bill will be ok with so many important people going down there?"

Quote:
"Harvey and Bill should be fine for this short absence, so why not? Let's go," said Andreas.

John simply nodded. "Allright then, good luck."

ooc: FYI, for anyone who is not familiar with Cerune's backstory:

She descends from the Pinky family (of FioJ fame). Gman's daughter went mad and killed her mother and sister, with Gman himself vanishing soon afterwards. As it turned out, Gman's daughter had become haunted (then possessed) by a deamon of Balgurd. A strange creature known only as the Angelguardian soon appeared (coincidentally right after Gman's disappearance) and fought the deamons of balgurd to free her soul. He was succesfull, but because she was still wanted for murder in jasonia, they travelled to Mirioth where she eventually married the count and had kids. Since then, their family line has been plagued by the deamons of Balgurd as part of an ongoing curse on the family line (which is still watched over by the Angelguardian). Cerune herself manifests this curse by being permanently bonded to a deamon that looks and sounds exactly like her. Most of the time it is kept asleep by the magic of the Angelguardian, but when it wakes up, Cerune can manifest distinctly deamonic powers (and a distinctly deamonic moral attitude).

The elevator doors opened to reveal a blue police box. From which Fides & Kathbhadh stepped.

"Geez it's cramped in there! So what's happening here?"
"Demons," said Andreas, "or at least that's what we think..."
"Righty-o!" Said Fides smiling and unholstering a huge gun.
"Before we get to blowing anything up, we should probably fortify ground zero. If there are demons down there; they can go through anything material via the astral plane. We'll get some MANA people working on that for you. Fides?"
Fides gulped
"We should probably do a little diplomacy first. I want you to go, considering you're half demon..."
"Ah, well..." stuttered Fides, "could you excuse me for a sec?"
Fides walked over to a corner of the room and rolled a die.
"I would like to be excused from this mission on the grounds that I failed my SAN check..."
"Don't be a sissy," said Nick, "I'll come with you."

"Balgurd demons," Andreas said. "They will almost certainly be Balgurd demons, if any. That give us the advantage, and the disadvantage, that they don't know NCM. But the Astral Plane at least is not a worry."
He surveyed the team. "Well, no time to waste. Let's be off, before this 'problem' becomes an 'apocalyptic quasi-demonic invasion'."
"Does that happen often to you?" Cerune asked.
"More often than you'd think ..."

It hadn't taken them long to reach the sealed cavern. The Marines had wisely blocked both it and the route there off, and so nobody hindered their progress save for a few elite guards just before they reached what Cerune had dubbed the 'trouble spot'. The guards they did pass were heartened to see Cerune taking an active lead in this issue - the others politely deferred to her when in the presence of the guards. "It always does to keep up a good appearance in front of the men," Andreas whispered to her, when she commented on this. But now they were approaching the sight of probable supernatural activity, and it wasn't time for small talk.

They advanced cautiously towards the place the mad marines had returned from. Andreas cast the necessary spells to render them invisible to others, and inaudible. Then, without a word, someone pointed. Ahead lay ...

OOC: Fides, you're not half demon by any stretch of the imagination, and I know it. You're a Demzus, currently.

...bodies.

Good gods, they were everywhere. Strung up on the walls, split in half on the ground, all the faces frozen in terror... at least what faces were left. Gammemalvin grimaced and cocked his gun as a reflex.

"These were good men..."

The party nodded, but Cerune was distracted, seemingly looking at the ground, inaudibly muttering to herself.

Ahead on the far wall, written in blood, was one word.

"Destiny."

From all sounds their came the wooping roars of Balgurdian demons, and then, more ominously, a flick of silver.
"Daemon fish," Andreas spat, as the Demons got closer. "Avoid them at all costs - they can steal your soul. But they aren't taking mine!" he added, as he whipped out a phantom blade and swiped at the demon closest to him. It was, of course, the Blade of Righteousness.

The others took our their weapons too and began to attack the demons, but Cerune was beginning to have a funny expression on her face. Andreas had some idea of what she'd experienced with demons, and didn't want a repeat here. Slashing off a demon arm (more and more seemed to be coming), he said, "Time we were out of here," and focussed on the floor. There was a momentary pause, and then below each of them, the floor dissapeared, and they fell through. The demons hissed as the floor closed up atop the fallen victims, as Andreas closed the spell.

Then he and the others dropped to a new cavern floor. It was darker here, and quieter, but off in the distance they could see a red glow ...

Cerune looked entirely shaken. She simply sat on the ground with her body propped up by her hands where she had fell. It had been a bad idea for her to come down here. A bad, bad idea. Her past history with the deamons of Balgurd meant she was safe from harm, but what they had in store for her was certainly NOT the better alternative.

"I'm... i'm sorry guys... that was my fault, I shouldn't have come. They... they knew we were there because I was there. I've endangered this mission..."

She trailed off, and the look on her face suggested she was talking to... something... in her head.

Andreas looked intently at Cerune for a while, as she muttered to herself. He counted to fifteen in his head, then asked, in a friendly voice, such as you would use on a nervous child, "What is it between you and the demons, Cerune?"
Cerune fell silent. "I didn't mean ..." she muttered.
"I know about Illumination, Cerune," Andreas replied, firmly. "I know this isn't the first time you've seen demons. But I don't know why." He crouched down and looked her in the eye. "I can help you, Cerune, but I can't help you if I don't know what the problem is. Tell me why you are plagued by demons."
"No one can help me," Cerune muttered. Andreas merely nodded, got up, and to Cerune's surprise, drew a sword. He sat down again, facing her, and held the sword on his lap.

"Do you know what this blade is?" he asked. Cerune shook her head. "This blade belonged to my mother," Andreas continued, "and her father before her, and his father before him, and so on for hundreds of generations. It originally belonged to my great great great ... add a lot of greats .... ancestor, St Nova. It was given to him, Cerune, by angels, before he ventured into Hell. That's right - my ancestor fought with demons and won, and this is the sword he did it with - this is the Blade of Righteousness."
Cerune was staring wide eyed - not at Andreas, but at the sword. Part of her was wondering why he was so carefully holding it across his lap, instead of just letting it rest on the other leg. "This is a demon-hunting Blade," Andreas continued, "because it can only be weilded by the righteous. Well, not completely righteous," he said, with a wink, "otherwise no one could use it, but you have to be reasonably good by human standards of morality to wield it. It's not a blade for killing people, or threatening things. It's a blade for killing demons, and only demons. It can only cut through demon flesh. Anything else," and here he let go of the sword, "the blade just passes through ..."
Cerune was amazed as the blade seemed to fall right through his leg, and the hilt clattered onto the ground - only the hilt stayed above ground, the rest of the blade seemed to be passing straight through the earth.
"It can cut through demons wherever, but only demons," he said, getting up, picking up the blade, and sheathing it. "I can help you, Cerune," he concluded. "But only if you let me."

OOC: I have read the Illumination thread but can't remember all the fine details of why Cerune was demon possessed. IC, I visited Illumination soon after those events (time lock and all that) and would have heard that she was somehow involved with the demon cult and summoning, but wouldn't actually know much more or many clear facts.

Cerune swallowed harshly, and tried her best to push back the rising panic in her head. She looked up past Andreas and for a split second, saw herself leaning over Andreas, her pointer finger in front of her lips, telling herself to be silent. She blinked and the illusion wafted away to nothing.

"My... my family... we've been cursed. There's this ceremony, it's called the Bondage Ceremony, and it binds you to a deamon. That deamon literally becomes you... and you become it. Like a scitzophrenic with an alternate deamonic personality.

She looked back down and rubbed her hair with her right hand, and continued.

"That sword... if you were to place that blade in my flesh, it would strike me down as surely as it would a demon. I am not plagued by deamons, Andreas.

I AM a deamon."

Ever watch Batman? She kind of has a Jason Blood/Demon Etrichan thing going on.

"So the rumours are true ..." Andreas said. He paused, and then said carefully, "You describe this as a ... curse. If you would like it lifted - I can guarantee nothing, but I would be happy to help you try and do so. If you do not want your ... partner ... removed, I will not hold it against you."
Cerune remained silent, thinking about this.
"If you make a decision, either way, do tell me," Andreas said, getting up. "But in the meantime, we need to deal with the demons outside your head."

The others got up and joined him, and they made their way further down the passage, advancing cautiously towards the red glow they had seen beforehand. They reached a corner in the passage, and Andreas motioned for them to stop. He held out his hand, and in it, their formed an image of .... the ground beneath his hand. But with the slightest hint of moving breeze, the image moved out and turned to look around the corner, from which the glow was coming.

It was a vast chamber. In the centre of it was a glowing red pool, which seemed to be some sort of bubbling liquid. Andreas recognised it from previous expeditions as a portal to Hell*, though he was used to them being a sickly green. Being red, this one was assumedly to a different part of Hell - Balgurd. Around it their was a number of demons, performing some sort of strange ritual. The demons were all large and vaguely humanoid, and with bright red flesh. Some had horns and tails, others looked like normal humans, apart from the red. Most had what looked like tattoos. They danced around the portal, chanting in a language none of them could understand. In the corner, there flicked a few daemon fish, silvery swift and always moving out of sight, even of the scry spell. It was as if they knew when someone was looking at them, and willed never to be seen. But there was something odd about the scene. Then Andreas realised it. None of the demons, or fish, had shadows.

But over the portal, the glow was beginning to diminish as something dark formed over it. They could not make out the shape, but it was clearly something shadowy ...

*Gralan backstory (which come to think of it probably only exists in my head) has Hell as a separate dimension to everything else. There are particular subsets of hell devoted to each world/universe. Thus the entry to hell near Gralus goes to a different hell than the entry to the Treesian Hell on Istvanistan, or any of the demon incursions into Shireroth (all of which would go to Balgurd). High ranking demons can travel between the different parts of hell, but normal people can't, and so think they each see the only Hell, not different parts of an overall conglomerate.

Also, for the Gralans - whatever this shadowy thing is, it is NOT shadows in the Fortuna Queen of the Shadows plagued the Etruri sense. It's some demonic thing involving shadows. After all, they've used shadow dragons in our expeditions before (well, once). But this has absolutely no connection with the shadows in the Dreaming or the Items of Fate or anything like that. Clear? :archy:

Andreas remarked upon the lack of shadows and Fides hid a fishing line behind his back.
"So... what does this mean?"

But before Andreas could answer, they heard a noise. The shadow thing was growing. Before they could even think it was twice the size of a normal human and still growing.
"What the PRH is that!" whispered Fides.
"This is out of my knowledge," said Andreas. "Cerune, do you know anything?"
"Yes. I do. And we can't fight that thing," she said. She quickly got up, then yelled "RUN! I'll hold it off!"
She ran toward it and the others quickly followed.
"We're not leaving you," said Andreas and Nicholas in unison.
"Wow that was creepy," said Fides, but the
"You don't even know what this is!" she screamed. The shadow beast, not yet in a recognisable shape, started moving towards them with demons following it, chanting.
Nicholas turned around to Andreas and Fides.
"As your Commander in Chief I order you to return to the surface. If you do not do this you will be forcibly detained. I don't want to hear excuses. Go. Now. Warn them. And if you can, send help."
"What about you?" said Fides nervously.
"I'm staying with Cerune," he said.
Andreas grabbed Fides and they ran, just as the chanting reached a crescendo, then stopped. The shadow thing, which was filling the area now, slowly reached out to them.
"Now what the PRH is this, Cerune?" said Nick.
"It's...

Andreas and Fides reached the surface.
"I have to go."
Andreas looked at Fides in surprise, he'd never run away from anything before...
"Fine, but you are coming back?"
Fides nodded.
"I'll brief everyone of the situation in the tunnels..."
Fides left in a flash of light.

**********************************************************************************************

"I will walk the earth forever, and my hunger shall know no bounds"
"Nice to see you too..." said Fides
The Lich looked at him. "Oh... sorry, thought you were someone else..."
"Yeah, it's me..."
"What do you want to ask about?"
"Demons, Balguard."
"Ooh! Adventure, can I come?"

OOC: This is before the destruction of BONE...

Decide amongst yourselves whether you want the Lich to come or not(he isn't evil)

OOC: Fides, which or what Lich is this? Are you talking to one of your memories of a past life? Or are you trying to talk to the Lich that's trapped in the Seven Hells (because you can't get in there (at least, not if you intend to get out again) unless I take you, security and all ....)? Or some other Lich entirely?

OOC: Fair enough - if you can write more about place and background it'll make it easier for the rest of us to follow. :b:

Quote:
Andreas, meanwhile, was wracking his brains for how to find knowledge on Balgurdian demons. There would be no books in Nelaga. Ideally, he would need to ask one of the great writers on Cedrism, such as Angel Guardian, or Bukolos, but that wasn't going to be easy ...

Or was it?

Andreas quickly wrote a note, and dispatched it with one of the marines in one of the new model experiment Epochs. Reconstructed from ancient Jasonian plans recovered after the war, this was still a prototype, but boy was it fast ...

OOC: Behold, I have been summoned!

Quote:
"I understand you are a busy and important man. Answer the first two questions at your leisure, but the third question (purely hypothetically, of course) is a matter of some urgency. If you would be so kind as to give it your consideration and either answer to this marine; or return with him to Nelaga to answer it in person, I would be most appreciative. The fate of Nelaga does not at all in any non-hypothetical way rest in your hands."

The Dutch re-read this last part, and then sighed. "Yes, of course. Entirely hypothetical, this." Glancing at the marine that still stood nervously outside the Epoch sitting on his lawn, he said, "I'll come back with you. Wait here for a moment."

Ambling into the Ducal residence with the rolling gait of one accustomed to life at sea, he proceeded to an old chest that he had brought with him upon his accession to the Dutchship. It had been handed down haphazardly among the devotees of B'caw among the Sundersprites for hundreds of years; ever since they had fled the Isle of Benacia during the Burning, so they said. They'd belonged to the non-human Count, Shyriath Bukolos, for whom the Dutch had been named.

Reverently opening the chest, he removed a fiery-red robe and donned it; then, similarly, a strange-looking priestly hat. (After a moment of thought, he stuck he favorite fish-hook into one corner of the brim.) And then, last but be no means least, a metal staff, black like cast iron, but with an odd gleam to it; said to be the weapon Ouchmaker, imbued with the spicy wrath of B'caw himself.

Feeling ready at last, Shyriath ambled once more out of the residence and began to climb into the Epoch. "Right. Let's go."

As the sleek fighter took off, he leaned back in the seat and pulled his priesting-hat down over his eyes. "And wake me up when we get there."

This, he thought sourly, ought to be interesting.
